Who and why?

A manager will have a significant impact on the morale and performance of their team. When successful in these areas, the manager will be leading team performance through the application of key management skills.

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) highlights the importance of managers as key reasons for why people stay or go from organisations. It is the manager who plays an important part in getting people to turn up to work, be productive and enjoy it.

It is clear that an essential management skill is to know how to effectively motivate people, and it is one that can be learnt. Once the manager is motivating people successfully, they can improve performance through effective delegation, based on an understanding of each individual’s capability, capacity and interest.

Course overview

This course will address the challenge of responding to individuals who may be motivated by very different things. The 4S model introduces the alternative approaches of Steer, Support, Show and Stimulate. The delegates will then apply this knowledge to their work team. The Human Needs Model, an adaption of Maslow, reviews what is important to employees in sophisticated work environments. Understanding this will empower the manager to meet these needs by, for example, generating certainty, investing in relationships and boosting engagement.

Delegation allows managers to make the best use of their time and skills – it enhances performance as well as help each team member to grow and reach their full potential. However, there are blocks to effective delegation which can have negative consequences for individuals and the organisation. The course will develop a route map based on key questions such as when to delegate, how to do it and who to delegate to.

Key learning points

By the end of the course delegates will be able to:

  • Understand and motivate a wide variety of personalities
  • Increase the performance of their team
  • Achieve success by delegating effectively
  • Build trust and develop rapport
  • Boost the capacity of their team
  • Demonstrate leadership
